No retrial planned in Galveston animal cruelty case

GALVESTON — Well-known bird watcher Jim Stevenson will not be retried on animal cruelty charges for killing a feral cat after the jury failed Friday to reach a verdict, Galveston County District Attorney Kurt Sistrunk said.

"I'm proud this case sparked a change in the law," Santell added, referring to a revised state animal cruelty law protecting feral cats and stray dogs that took effect Sept. 1.
