Group tackles task of rescuing feral, tame felines

SOUTH ELGIN — For Carol Schultz, cats aren't just the affectionate creatures she comes home to at night. The retired South Elgin woman spends the majority of her time caring for and rescuing her feline friends
Schultz is the originator and manager of Guardian Angels Animal Care and Rescue, a nonprofit organization dedicated to the rescue of wild, unwanted and abused animals.

Outside the building is a makeshift feral cat motel, where wild cats can retire from city life and exit at will to the Meadowlands. Each cat becomes part of a spay, neuter and release program. McClure said many times wildlife like possums, groundhogs, skunks, raccoons and the feral cats annoy residents. They are rapidly retrieved and relocated to more uninhabited spots of Secaucus. "While we're not a no-kill shelter, we rarely euthanize," McClure said. "We pick up the wild ones [and] put them where they can work on keeping the rodent population down."

The $1,500 college scholarship is awarded yearly to a New England high school senior who has done significant work in animal protection.
"Susan's success at translating her concern for animals into direct action that improves the lives of homeless pets is inspiring," said Joanne Bourbeau, director of the Humane Society's New England Regional Office. "The Humane Society of the United States commends Susan for her strong leadership and commitment to animal welfare."
Susan and Donna Misur love their cat, Cookie, who at one time was a feral cat. "My friends were doing construction and they found her under a rock," Susan said. "She was so tiny, only 2 weeks old. We had to bottle feed her."
This summer, she has volunteered for the Stratford Cat Project, a non-profit organization that helps the feral cat population and rescues homeless cats.
