Study finds coyotes at high risk in upstate suburb
Newsday.com, NY
ALBANY, N.Y. -- Traffic and hunters are killing coyotes faster than they reproduce in a nature preserve outside Albany, according to new research indicating some suburbs are particularly deadly for New York's top wildlife predator.
[Excerpts]
Bogan plans do research at Cornell University in a state-funded study of why the once-wary creatures are becoming more aggressive toward humans. That study is responding to complaints of attacked pets in the suburbs north of New York City and the Syracuse area. In Westchester County, a Lhasa apso, a Chihuahua and bichon frise were reported killed in back yards in the past few years.
"One of interesting things in comparing that with what we found, there aren't a lot of coyote hunters in those areas," Kays said.
His study published last year in the journal Animal Conservation concluded that cats seldom went more than 50 yards into the Pine Bush because of coyotes and fishers. Kays said that was good news for small mammals and songbirds and helped keep things in balance.
"House cats can kind of run amok, especially the feral ones, if they don't have a predator to keep them in check," he said. "We found cats were sticking close to home so they could run back to a refuge if they had to."

In other business, the council unanimously voted to:
• Authorize $30,000 for PB Cats, the town's feral cat control program, to run the program through the fiscal year that ends Sept. 30 and make payments on accrued veterinary bills. The $30,000 is in addition to a $50,000 appropriation the council gave PB Cats for this fiscal year and $50,000 for the fiscal year beginning Oct. 1.
PB Cats had a cash balance of $5,375 as of July 31, and costs $10,000 a month to operate, according to the town Finance Department, which recently assumed financial record-keeping duties for the organization.
