From The Animal Spirit:
Permission to crosspost!

Wanted! TNR Feral Cat Colony Success Stories

Because Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is under fire in several States, I would like to collect testimonials from feral cat caretakers regarding their successful work implementing TNR. The testimonials will appear on The Animal Spirit site, with author receiving full credit and retaining copyright of the story. You could submit a couple of photos as well, though that is not mandatory.

You don't have to write a masterpiece -- just a paragraph or two about the colonies you have worked with, or are currently working with, is all that is necessary.

Thanks in advance for your contributions! Any questions, feel free to contact me at FeralPlace@aol.com.

Congratulations, Marjorie!
Editor, Sun-Gazette: Congratulations to Marjorie Baumgartner of Cogan Station for her letter of September 13, 2003 about "The only solution." Marjorie does everyone a service by suggesting a practical, tested means to deal with feral cats: "There is a viable alternative to killing cats. Managed colonies using TNR teach compassion for cats, nonviolence, and tolerance for others. Visit www.alleycat.org for more information about TNR – the only solution to overpopulation."

The Cat Lady
©Shell 2003
This story is not only for "cat-lovers." It's the story of how one person can make a difference, no matter how small the deed. I hope it inspires you to do something -- anything -- to help better the world for both humans & nonhumans.
The block I grew up on in New York consisted of several houses, a small animal shelter, a colony of stray and feral cats, and an official "cat lady." Looking back, I realize my fate was sealed. [To continue this wonderful story, click here]

PANORA CITY COUNCIL
The Guthrian, IA
September 11, 2003
[Scroll down to - excerpted here]
Cats - Panora has a cat overpopulation and Kristie Jorgensen is trying to do something about it as she is forming a group to deal with the felines humanely. She inquired of city officials about cats at the trailer court where she has been giving medication to the animals. People dump cats there, she said.
City administrator Sue Cosner said the city has no plans to remove the 12-20 cats at the trailer court as disposal at shelters is too costly. Jorgensen wants to reduce the city's cat population, but not by destroying or dumping the animals, but finding a place for them.

HONESDALE Sets Leaf Burning Rules
By PETER BECKER
Wayne Independent, PA
Thursday, September 11, 2003
€ Police are enforcing the ordinance regarding cats allowed to run loose. Cats are caught in a "safe trap" and taken to Dessin Shelter; the owner must pay to retrieve the cat. Bishop said they are not cat haters, but residents are frustrated with the damage cats can cause. One local taxpayer was cited $150 for violating the ordinance; he took it to the magistrate and lost the case, which cost him another $59.

In other business, the Butternut Village Board:
Heard a report by Neumann on a hearing to be scheduled next month on the planned permanent closing of the trailer park in Butternut due to alleged constant problems with the majority of trailer owners failing to keep up to date with rent, tenants failing to put garbage on the curb for pickup, and nuisances such as a large population of cats. Neumann said letters would be sent out informing those involved of the closure plan and of the hearing. He said the process to completely close the trailer park would take about l-1/2 years.

Police Chief Dee Rowland requested the change, saying the cat leash law is "impossible to enforce" and takes time and resources away from other priorities. It was not clear whether a new law would allow cats to roam freely; the City Council has asked city staff to study the issue.

Questions For Quack's Corner
Tuesday, September 02, 2003
Bridgeton News, NJ
[Excerpt]
Dear Quack's Corner: How long does it take to tame a wild cat? -- R.L.
Dear R.L.: This depends on many factors, such as her age, how long she's been feral (wild), and her individual personality. I've had feral cats never come around to the point where you can hold them and they actually enjoy being petted instead of just tolerating it. Some may even become affectionate, but this may take three to five years. A true feral will never become a lap cat, but in time, when trust is gained, can make a nice pet as long as the owner is not insistent on making unreasonable demands on the animal, such as forcing the cat to be held. Most will learn to tolerate being groomed and having their nails clipped. You must always remember that you are dealing with a wild animal (even though this is a domestic cat technically), and they will quickly revert to this behavior when frightened or confined. There is such a good feeling when a feral cat begins to trust you and a "friendship" is being established. Patience.

Enact a cat-licensing ordinance that will encourage cat owners to keep their bird-killers indoor.
